Welcome to GEMS (Geographic Exploration and Mining Services), the interactive GIS mapping application.
To use this application please have internet web browser pop-up blockers disabled.
GEMS is a free, web-based GIS mapping tool, built around the ESRI ArcIMS software, that allows users to access a variety of geographic data sets held by the Department. Users can utilise GEMS to perform a number of tasks including:
- Creating their own customisable maps using a wide range of GIS layers (e.g. permit, mineral deposit and geological data).
- Printing out maps and associated tabular information.
- Interactively querying and interrogating EMD's geospatial databases (e.g. boreholes and mineral deposits).
For ease of use, the spatial data has been grouped into four Map Themes:
Location and Permit Status: Displays topographic maps at various scales, exploration permit (PL) boundaries and status, and joint venture opportunities.
Mineral Exploration: Provides bedrock geology layers, borehole data, mineral deposit occurrences, airborne geophysics survey information and permit (PL) areas for which online exploration reports are available.
Mining: Gives current and historic mining permits, active, post-1950 and historic mining sites, plus locations of underground workings (e.g. shafts).
Environmental: Includes national parks, nature reserves, forestry areas, locations of national/historic monuments and gas pipelines.
Additional map data is progressively added to the site as it becomes available. Users can keep abreast of all recently uploaded data by referring to the Whats New section of the home page.
