Taking of Elvers/Glass Eels
The minimum information we will require for a Certificate of authorisation under Section 14 of the Fisheries (Consolidation) Act, 1959 as substituted by Section 4 of the Fisheries (Amendment) Act, 1962 for the taking of Elvers / Glass Eels is as follows:-
1. A description of the aims and objectives of the project.
2. The duration of the project. If for restocking/improvement of a fishery - where it is proposed to restock, the reason why stocking is necessary.
3. Details of the people consulted, in particular, the Regional Fisheries Board, fishery owners and land owners on the river(s).
4. Details of the water(s)/river(s) involved and the status of the stock from which it is proposed to take Glass Eels / Elvers.
5. How it is proposed to take the Glass Eels / Elvers.
6. The amount you wish to capture.
7. Details of the personnel involved.
8. Any other information which you may have available to support your application.
NOTE:
(A): There is no open season for Glass Eels or Elvers, and the taking of Glass Eels/Elvers is strictly prohibited at all times. Notwithstanding the foregoing a person authorised by the Minister under Section 14 of the Fisheries (Consolidation) Act, 1959 as substituted by Section 4 of the Fisheries (Amendment) Act, 1962, may take elvers and or glass eels for the purpose of artificial propagation, scientific purposes or improvement of fisheries if it is considered to be in the public interest to do so.
(B): The Department has decided after consultation with the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board, ESB and the Marine Institute that the taking of elvers/glass eels from the waters of the Shannon Region for the purpose of stocking waters in that Region should be carried out by the E.S.B. and/or the Shannon Board using their own staff and or contract staff as they see fit.
