What is Knowledge Management?

  • Knowledge Management (KM) is an integrated, systematic approach to identifying, creating, capturing, managing and sharing all of the Department’s knowledge.

Objectives

  • assist the Department’s ultimate evolution into a knowledge-based organisation
  • record all Division’s business processes and assist in the development of process maps
  • create an environment in which all business is transacted in a standardised, template-structured and documented way
  • advise and support Strategic Change Unit on new or evolving roles in the Department and assist the Department in being in the forefront of the harnessing of KM
  • develop a culture that encourages proactive knowledge sharing
  • improve service delivery by reducing duplication of effort by improving information sharing and accessibility
  • improve the use of existing technology
  • highlight issues associated with the procurement of additional or supporting technology tools
  • implement a more logical, user-friendly directory structure in the shared drives of each Division



Deliverables

  • the Department will have a list of its processes  - the processes with top priority will be mapped
  • each Division will restructure their file directories for easier access to information
  • the Department will be mobilised in readiness for KM and the benefits it confers
  • there will be improved use of technology - improved productivity/work practices
  • the Department will be ready to adopt a structured process for knowledge asset capture and use
